Dr. Bussey-Jones is the Carter Smith, Sr Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine of Emory University’s School of Medicine. She received her BS in Sociology and later her MD from Emory University. She currently serves as the Chief of Grady General Medicine and Geriatrics, the Vice Chair for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the Department of Medicine, and the Associate Dean for Professional Development for Emory at Grady. Dr. Bussey-Jones has nationally recognized educational expertise in the areas of health equity and inclusive leadership. She has developed several program initiatives addressing health promotion and disease prevention for vulnerable populations. She developed and directed curricula on cultural competence, disparities, and social determinants of health for students, residents and faculty and was recognized with an Educational Innovation Award for this work. She has chaired the National Disparities Education Task Force for the Society of General Internal Medicine organization and served as editor for a special issue of the Journal of General Internal Medicine dedicated to disparities education. In this role, her leadership resulted in an award-winning national disparities course, web based educational modules, and national symposia on disparities at both the Society of General Internal Medicine and at the American Association of Medical Colleges. In 2023, she was recognized with the AAMC-GDI Exemplary Leadership in DEI Award. She is the current president for the Society of General Internal Medicine.

Joanna Bonsall, MD, PhD, SFHM is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine and is the Chief of Emory Medicine Services at Grady Memorial Hospital. She completed her undergraduate training at Emory University, and her medical and graduate training at Emory University School of Medicine. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at Emory University and was hired as a hospitalist at Emory University Hospital Midtown in 2009, before transferring to Grady Memorial Hospital in 2017 to establish a direct care service line. For her work at Grady, she was awarded the first Emory University School of Medicine Distinguished Service Award in 2018.
Dr. Bonsall’s clinical interests are in the management of pneumonia as well as care transitions. Dr. Bonsall also has a strong interest in medical education and career development. She was the Hospital Medicine Associate Division Director for Faculty Development from 2014 to 2019 and sat on the Department of Medicine’s Promotions and Tenure Committee from 2018-2020. In the School of Medicine, she is the Co-director of the MD/PhD program and played a key role in transforming the MD/PhD training curriculum. She work with the Society of Hospital Medicine includes chairing of the Academic Committee from 2016 to 2019, co-directing the 2015, 2016 and 2017 Academic Summits and the Southern Hospital Medicine Conference from 2014 to 2018, and serving on the Annual Conference Committee.

Emily Mallin, MD, FACP, SFHM

Emily Mallin, MD, FACP, SFHM is a Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix (UACOMP) and serves as Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Medicine. She is an Associate Program Director of the Internal Medicine residency program focused on faculty development and clinical medical education for all levels of learners.
Dr. Mallin attended medical school at Tel Aviv University, followed by residency and chief residency at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix (BUMCP). She has been an academic hospitalist for over 15 years, serving as medical director of the academic hospital medicine group from 2012-2017, and as Chair of the GME Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Committee from 2013-2023. She is an executive committee member of the Women in Medicine and Science group at UACOMP and sits on the Faculty Advisory Council to the Dean.
Over her career, Dr. Mallin has invested in the development of others, as others have done for her – from learners to faculty, though career development programs, mentorship and coaching at her institution and nationally. As a medical educator, she has worked to optimize the clinical learning environment and bridge the transition from undergraduate to graduate medical education through mitigating disparities, navigating mistreatment, and improving processes through collaborative innovation.
She is a past chair of the Society of Hospital Medicine Academic Committee and is an inaugural member of the DEI Committee. She speaks nationally on quality improvement and patient safety, coaching and leadership, and other topics in academic and clinical medicine. She served as faculty for Academic Hospitalist Academy Level 1 for several years and is honored to have served as course co-director of Academic Hospitalist Academy Level 2 since its inception.

Nathan O’Dorisio, MD FHM is an Associate Professor of Medicine at The Ohio State University. After graduating from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1998 he completed his residency in Internal medicine and Pediatrics at Ohio State and Nationwide Children’s Hospital and served as Chief Resident for Internal Medicine in 2003. In 2003 he created/founded the Division of Hospital Medicine at Ohio State and in 2005 created the combined Med/Peds Hospitalist program in collaboration with Ohio State and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Over the years he has served as Division Director, Vice Chair of Clinical Medicine within the Department of Internal Medicine, served on Promotion and Tenure committee and was the inpatient representative for the implementation of EMR across the Health system. His clinical focus has been primarily geared towards transitions of care, minimizing harms associated with hospitalization and system design and improved implementation of novel models of care delivery. From a leadership standpoint his focus has been on the creation of sustainable career pathways and the development/promotion of faculty within the Academic Hospitalist environment. He is currently a member of the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) Academic Hospitalist Commission and has previously served on the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) Academic Hospitalist Committee. Dr. O’Dorisio continues to be involved in the faculty development, mentoring and operational aspects of care delivery at Ohio State and across the country.

Carrie Herzke, M.D., M.B.A. is vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer of The Johns Hopkins Hospital. In this role, Dr. Herzke leads the efforts and initiatives of the credentialed medical staff at the hospital, as well as the departments of pharmacy and spiritual care and medical staff office, and provides oversight for hospital medical directors.
Dr. Herzke spent the majority of her medical career at Johns Hopkins, leaving for two years to become chief medical officer for the Charleston division of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) before returning in April 2024.
A native of Virginia, Dr. Herzke earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Virginia and a medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. She completed her residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at Duke University Medical Center. In 2017, she received her Master of Business Administration degree from the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2022.
Dr. Herzke is a long-time member and leader within several national organizations, including the Society of Hospital Medicine and Society for General Internal Medicine. She is also active within the Vizient CMO Executive Steering Committee and the Association of American Medical Colleges Chief Medical Officers’ Group.

Luci K. Leykum, MD, MBA, MSc, FACP, SFHM is the Principal Investigator for the Elizabeth Dole Center of Excellence for Veteran and Caregiver Research, the Chief Clinical Officer for Harbor Health, and an affiliate Professor of Medicine at Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Leykum pursued a joint MD/MBA at Columbia University. She completed residency training at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, joining the Columbia faculty in 2002. From 2004 – 2019, she was a faculty member at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, serving in several administrative roles including Division Chief of General and Hospital Medicine, and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs. From 2019 – 2022, she served as Associate Chair for Clinical Innovation and then as Executive Associate Chair of the Department of Medicine at Dell Medical School in the University of Texas at Austin. In 2022, she joined Harbor Health, a new healthcare delivery organization in Austin, Texas.
Dr. Leykum has received funding from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute, the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. She is formerly a Senior Deputy Editor of the Journal of Hospital Medicine and a Deputy Editor of the Journal of General Internal Medicine, and now serves on the Editorial Board of the Annals of Internal Medicine. She is a former Chair of the SHM Research Committee, co-Chair of the SGIM Academic Hospitalist Task Force, and member of the SGIM Council. Finally, she served as a member of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine ad hoc committee on Implementing High Quality Primary Care in the United States.

Chris Sankey, MD SFHM FACP is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Yale School of Medicine and is the current director of Yale’s academic Program in Hospital Medicine. He graduated from the Ohio State University College of Medicine and was a resident and chief resident in the Yale traditional medicine residency program from 2002-2006. For the last 18 years, Dr. Sankey has been a hospitalist and medical educator at Yale New Haven Hospital. His work has focused on inpatient clinical deterioration, clinical case writing and publication, educational leadership and innovation, mentorship, sponsorship, and coaching. He was an Associate Program Director for the traditional medicine residency program from 2017-2022. In addition to directing the academic hospitalist group in the Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Sankey is currently the co-chief of Yale’s Hospital Medicine Firm, program director of the Adult Hospital Medicine Fellowship Program, and faculty director of the resident elective in hospital medicine. He is currently a member of the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) Academic Hospitalist Commission and has previously served on the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) Academic Hospitalist Committee. Dr. Sankey is involved in multiple initiatives on diversity, equity, and inclusion within and outside of Yale, and is a physician coach for Yale medical students.
