Emily Mallin, MD, FACP, SFHM, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix and serves as Director of Education for the Department of Medicine. She is an Associate Program Director of the Internal Medicine residency program and chairs the GME Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Committee. She served as Director of the academic hospital medicine service at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix from 2012-2017.

Joanna Bonsall, MD, PhD, SFHM is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine and is the Chief of Hospital Medicine at Grady Memorial Hospital. She completed her undergraduate training at Emory University, and her medical and graduate training at Emory University School of Medicine. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at Emory University and was hired as a hospitalist at Emory University Hospital Midtown in 2009, before transferring to Grady Memorial Hospital in 2017 to establish a direct care service line.
Dr. Bonsall has a strong interest in medical education at all levels, from medical students to faculty. She was the Hospital Medicine Associate Division Director for Faculty Development from 2014 to 2019 and served on the Department of Medicine’s Promotions and Tenure Committee for three years. In the School of Medicine, she is the Clinical Co-director of the MD/PhD program and is the developer and director for an MD/PhD clinical refresher course. In the Society of Hospital Medicine, she was the chair of the Academic Committee from 2016 to 2019 and co-Directed the 2015, 2016 and 2017 Academic Summits and the SHM annual meetings’ speed-mentoring activity. She also co-directed the Southern Hospital Medicine Conference from 2013 – 2018.

Nate grew up in Columbus, Ohio and attended Villanova University prior to returning to The Ohio State University. He completed medical school and Internal Medicine-Pediatrics combined residency before his Chief resident year at Ohio State. At Ohio State he began the Division of Hospital medicine in 2003 and later help develop dedicated pediatric Hospital service as well as Adult consultative service for the Pediatric Hospital. He was Associate Director of Hospital Medicine and later the Division Director until 2015. He has served as Associate Vice Chair for Inpatient Medicine for the Department of Internal Medicine and actively designed several new patient care paradigms within the Department. Currently an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine, his focus is on faculty development, teaching medical students, residents and junior faculty about process improvement, efficiency and organizational strategy. He co-directs the annual Ohio State University CME “Update in Hospital Medicine.

Carrie Herzke is an Associate Professor at MUSC. She attended the University of Virginia, the Medical College of Virginia, and the Carey School of Business at Johns Hopkins and did her Medicine and Pediatrics Residency at Duke. She served in a number of roles at Johns Hopkins Hospital including Associate Chief Medical Officer prior to joining MUSC as CMO in 2022. She has been a member of the SHM Academic Committee and is currently on the SHM Annual Meeting Committee, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force, and the SGIM Academic Hospitalist Task Force. Her areas of interest are Faculty Development, Academic Leadership, and partnering with Difficult Patients.

Chris Sankey is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Yale School of Medicine and is the current Director of the Program in Hospital Medicine at Yale. He is a graduate of the Ohio State University College of Medicine and completed residency training in the Yale Traditional Internal Medicine Residency Program (TIMRP) from 2002-2005. Chris was a Chief Resident at Yale for the 2005-6 academic year and has been a Hospitalist at Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) from 2006 to the present. He was the Medical Director of the YNHH Rapid Response Team from 2010-2016 and was an Associate Program Director for the Yale TIMRP from 2017-22. He is the Co-Firm Chief of Yale’s new Hospital Medicine Firm. Chris served on the Society of Hospital Medicine Academic Hospitalist Committee from 2016-2020 and is currently a member of the Society of General Internal Medicine’s Academic Hospitalist Commission. He is involved in multiple initiatives on diversity, equity, and inclusion at Yale and is a part of the SGIM DEI Workgroup. His areas of interest are inpatient medical education, curricular development, academic leadership, clinical case-writing, and inpatient clinical deterioration.

Dr. Leykum serves as the executive associate chair of the Department of Medicine at the Dell Medical School for the University of Texas at Austin. She is also the center lead and principal investigator for the Elizabeth Dole Center of Excellence for Veteran and Caregiver Research for the Department of Veterans Affairs through the South Texas Veterans Health Care System. Dr. Leykum completed medical school at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and her residency training in internal medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center. She earned her MBA at Columbia University and her M.S. in clinical investigation at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Prior to joining Dell Med, Leykum served as the chief of general and hospital medicine at UT Health San Antonio. Her other administrative roles at UT Health San Antonio included assistant chair for clinical services and quality and associate dean for clinical affairs. She is on the Editorial Board of the Annals of Internal Medicine, after serving previously as a senior deputy editor for the Journal of Hospital Medicine and a deputy editor for the Journal of General Internal Medicine. She was a Member of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Committee on Implementing High-Quality Primary Care. Dr. Leykum is a member of the Society of General Internal Medicine, for which she served on the Council and as co-chair of the Academic Hospitalist Task Force. She is also a member of the Society of Hospital Medicine, for which she served as chair of the research committee.
